Defra has published an interim statement on its rapid review of the Environment Improvement Plan (EIP). That statement can be found here.
In response Natalie Prosser, Chief Executive of the OEP, said:
“Government is currently off track to meet its environmental targets and commitments. That trajectory can be changed, but the window of opportunity is closing fast. Getting the revised EIP right is key.
“We welcomed the rapid review and the opportunity to contribute advice to that process. We can see from the update statement published yesterday (Thursday, 30 Jan) that much of our advice has been taken into account, and the direction of travel is positive.
“The revised EIP must show real intent, and focus. It needs to front load efforts to catch up and to set out clearly to all, what has to be done, by whom and by when, with realistic and determined delivery plans to make achieving these imperative targets and commitments a reality.
“We now await the detail of the revised EIP with great interest. But even more important than the plan, will be the actions to ensure it leads to effective and urgent change.”
